Why Does My Toilet Keep Running? Causes, Fixes and When to Call a Plumber

Ever been annoyed by the persistent sound of water running in your bathroom? If the constant trickle from your toilet is driving you up the wall, you are not alone. A running toilet is one of the most common household plumbing issues in the UK, and while it might seem minor at first, it can waste a surprising amount of water and increase your bills over time.

Interestingly, even highly engineered systems are not immune to toilet troubles. In the news recently, astronauts on the Artemis II mission experienced recurring toilet malfunctions aboard the Orion spacecraft. Engineers traced the issue to a mix of mechanical faults and suspected ice blockages affecting the system. If something as advanced as a space mission can run into toilet problems, it is no surprise that domestic systems can too.

In this blog, we explore the most common reasons why your toilet keeps running, what you can do about it, and when it is time to call in a professional.

Common Causes of a Running Toilet

A running toilet usually means that water is continuously flowing from the cistern into the bowl. This is often caused by a fault in one of the internal components. Common culprits include:

1. Faulty flapper valve
The flapper valve controls the release of water from the cistern into the bowl when you flush. Over time, it can become worn, warped or misaligned. When this happens, it no longer forms a proper seal, allowing water to leak through constantly.

2. Float problems
The float regulates the water level in the cistern. If it is set too high, water can spill into the overflow pipe, causing a continuous running sound. If it is damaged or stuck, it may not shut off the water supply properly.

3. Worn fill valve
The fill valve controls the flow of water into the cistern after each flush. A worn or faulty valve may fail to shut off completely, leading to a constant trickle of water.

4. Chain issues
The chain that connects the flush handle to the flapper can sometimes be too tight or too loose. If it prevents the flapper from sealing correctly, water will keep leaking into the bowl.

5. Limescale build-up
In parts of Cornwall, hard water can lead to limescale deposits inside your toilet’s internal components. This can interfere with how parts move and seal, leading to ongoing leaks.

Simple Checks You Can Do at Home

Before calling a plumber, there are a few things you can check yourself.

  • Lift the cistern lid and inspect the flapper valve for wear or misalignment
  • Check that the float is not set too high and moves freely
  • Look for visible signs of damage or limescale on internal components
  • Ensure the chain has enough slack to allow the valve to close properly

In many cases, a simple adjustment or a low-cost replacement part can resolve the issue quickly.

Why You Should Not Ignore a Running Toilet

A constantly running toilet is more than just an annoyance. It can waste hundreds of litres of water each day, which adds up on your water bill and is not great for the environment either.

Over time, the problem can also worsen. Small leaks can lead to more significant wear on components, increasing the likelihood of a more expensive repair down the line.
